Job Description:

The State and Local Tax (SALT) Compliance Supervisor is the primary return preparer of state and local corporate income tax returns of moderate complexity. He/She ensures state qualifications are maintained and conducts tax research. The SALT Compliance Supervisor supervises SALT Compliance Associates.

Job Duties

Prepares State and Local Taxes

  • Prepares corporate income tax returns for assigned companies to ensure they are filed within established guidelines.
  • Conducts first review of state and local tax returns prepared by State and Local Tax Compliance Associates to ensure a proper return is prepared.
  • Researches notices and follows up on refunds to ensure notices are sustained or reversed and to account for refund checks.
  • Reviews journal entries to ensure proper General Accepted Accounting Principles and tax treatment for transactions occurs.
  • Understands state codes, regulations, and tax return instructions to ensure a proper tax return is prepared.

Performs Tax Research and Planning

  • Participates in continued education to become knowledgeable of tax laws and changes.
  • Composes tax memos (i.e., state facts, issues, and conclusion) to provide positions and calculations on proposed legislation.
  • Assists in preparation of federal taxes to broaden tax expertise.
  • Networks internally to increase awareness of transactions and potential tax consequences.

Supervises and Develops Others

  • Determines employees’ training needs to produce continuous development plans.
  • Provides on-going feedback and support to improve performance.
  • Conducts performance evaluations in a consistent, fair, and objective manner to encourage continuous performance improvement.
  • Holds others accountable to established performance levels to achieve individual and group goals.
  • Resolves individual and group performance issues in accordance with UPS’s policies and procedures in a timely manner to motivate and foster teamwork.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • CPA, Preferred
