Q&A with Muhammed
What attracted you to UPS?
UPS is a well-established company, so there would be plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. I also had a referral for the internship, which gave me additional information and made me look forward to the learning opportunities.
At a high level, can you tell us about your internship role?
I'm part of the Business Intelligence and Analytics team, so the whole team is working on a few assignments. My main assignment is fraud detection. We’re developing a system that would be used to make informed decisions, avoid fraudulent claims on the shipments, and hopefully identify the risky areas. All in all, we’re trying to reduce loss and fraud.
What has your internship/co-op given you the opportunity to learn so far?
The first week we did onboarding and the second week we got direction on the assignments. Overall, I learned a few important things about the business and the technology being used on the project. I have a good idea of the technical and analytical aspects of what I can learn and what I am already learning.
Share some tips for making the most of your UPS internship, such as networking with other interns and learning about the company’s culture.
Senior staff and pretty much everyone—from the president to everyone we are reporting to—are very helpful. It is a very encouraging environment to work and learn in. Be sure to take advantage of the days and ask as many questions as you need to.
What do you enjoy the most about UPS’s company culture?
I enjoy many things, starting with the flexibility. It is not a dismissive environment, it’s actually very welcoming. There’s also a lot of diversity in terms of ethnicity, and you have the opportunity to learn about different cultures. It’s good to have an environment that supports getting to know peers.
