Job Description:

The Segment Management Director develops, manages, and markets UPS solutions for current and new customers within a given segment. He/She provides leadership in development, implementation, and growth strategies for their segment of customers. This position manages segment marketing programs and initiatives for deployment through appropriate sales, marketing, and communication channels. In addition, he/she manages the activities and direction of segment specific field marketing resources. The Segment Management Director supervises managers, and supervisors.


Defines Segment Strategies

  • Evaluates customer needs, market conditions, and the competitive landscape to develop effective marketing plans.

  • Reviews situational assessments (i.e., SWOT [strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats] analysis) on a regular basis to leverage insights for segment development.

  • Conducts meetings with cross-functional marketing groups to develop strategies that provide a competitive advantage to UPS in targeted markets.

  • Participates in cross-functional meetings to support and evaluate current strategies and on-going initiatives.

  • Evaluates opportunities based on customer needs and competitive differentiators to develop bundled offerings.

  • Manages and tracks the revenue growth and profitability of segments to measure the impact of marketing plans and initiatives.

  • Conducts one-on-one interviews with customers on a regular basis to develop insights and ensure strategies are in alignment with customer needs.

  • Participates in pricing and rate-setting discussions to provide direction and support to the rate setting process.

  • Participates in operational planning and forecasting sessions to provide market and customer information during operational planning phases.

Develops New Marketing Initiatives and Manages Segments

  • Develops annual sales and marketing programs to determine the most efficient way to present initiatives to customers (e.g., direct sales force, web, internal sales force, etc.).

  • Prepares and presents strategic vision to the sales force to obtain internal stakeholders' approval and support.

  • Participates on the Enterprise Initiative Committee to gain support of new initiatives within the organization.

  • Manages the revenue growth and profitability of products and services within defined initiatives to ensure effectiveness of initiatives.

  • Reports planned versus actual segment performance and opportunities to monitor the effectiveness of marketing plans.

Participates in External Programs and Conferences

  • Represents UPS at external events to enhance UPS visibility within targeted industry segments.

  • Attends trade shows and conferences relevant to the industry to present, participate, and educate the industry about UPS.

  • Networks at trade shows to gather information to develop talks for corporate executives.

  • Represents UPS to external marketing organizations to leverage industry expertise within UPS's marketing programs.

  • Studies and seeks understanding of current best practices and success in business-to-business and business-to consumer environments to ensure successful execution of vision and business strategies.

  • Represents UPS as a marketing industry expert with clients.

Manages Product Value Proposition

  • Evaluates customer needs and market conditions to maintain focus on the customer when developing new features of services.

  • Coordinates facilitation of enterprise release efforts to ensure accurate development and deployment of product features.

  • Facilitates cross-functional meetings to share information relative to new and proposed programs.

  • Develops relationships with senior management to ensure marketing priorities and initiatives are aligned with corporate business objectives and represented in corporate communication and advertising plans when appropriate.

  • Participates on marketing initiative committees to ensure correct deployment and direction of plans.

Leads and Develops Others

  • Manages resources and people processes (e.g., Performance Management, Career Development, Succession

  • Planning, Salary Administration, Training, Staffing, etc.) to ensure the day to day administration of processes and formal procedures.

  • Identifies individual and team skill gaps and developmental opportunities (e.g., training, special assignments, projects, etc.) to facilitate individual and team development.

  • Ensures that direct and indirect reports have specific, documented career goals and detailed plans for achieving these goals to advance the development of their personal and professional growth.

  • Conducts frequent performance evaluations in a consistent, fair, and objective manner to facilitate open communication and encourage continuous performance improvement.

  • Holds others accountable to established performance levels to achieve individual and group goals and maintain consistent practices across the organization.

  • Resolves individual and group performance issues in accordance with UPS’s policies and procedures in a timely manner to motivate and foster teamwork.

  • Coaches others and provides on-going feedback and support to improve performance as they take on greater responsibilities.

  • Identifies opportunities to involve others in new and challenging work assignments that advance the skills and capabilities of individuals and the organization.

  • Recommends employees for lateral rotations and promotions to provide them with opportunities to develop new skills and take on more responsibility.

Directs Program Development

  • Coordinates segment direction, prioritization, and activities of Business Development (BD), GBS, and other functions to ensure strategic alignment.

  • Directs tactical strategies to address immediate customer problems in defined marketing groups.

  • Reviews market research to develop future marketing strategies.

  • Oversees the development of proof of concept to determine if programs are correctly addressing target market.

  • Determines strategies for new initiatives to develop creative programs that meet customer demands and drive brand differentiation through traditional marketing mediums or newly designed program.

  • Directs the resources and priorities of the field marketing resources supporting Segment Marketing to improve market share in the middle market.

Oversees and Manages Programs

  • Partners with database marketing, market research, Business Information Analysis (BIA), Opportunity Analysis Group (OAG), and other groups to analyze customer behavior and trends.

  • Manages execution of pilot programs by working with internal resources (e.g. Project Management Office, marketing and sales, etc.) to assure programs are developed according to plan.

  • Manages project timelines to assure mission critical programs are delivered on time.

  • Drives global channel marketing, development and training plans to assure all plans are received and understood in the field.

  • Works with Communications department to ensure the development and execution of integrated communication plans to support targeted marketing work.

Participates in New Product Development Projects

  • Evaluates New Product Development concepts to determine portfolio fit and on-going management responsibilities (post-deployment).

  • Supports the development of New Product Development concepts and "build" stage projects to ensure successful deployment of new products and technology.

  • Identifies portfolio gaps and market opportunities for New Product Development to evaluate based on industry knowledge and experience to enhance UPS's competitive position.

Job Requirements:

  • Possess a minimum Bachelor’s Degree or master’s degree in Business, Marketing, or related disciplines

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant working experience in marketing (inclusive of segment management, micro market management and customer profitability management).

  • Successful people management experience with motivational skills

  • Excellent English writing skills and impeccable verbal and presentation skills.

  • Excellent decision-making skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and able to work well with people of all levels

  • Creative, self-starter, highly motivated with exceptional analytical, multi-tasking, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Possess business acumen and work within cross functional teams

  • Results-oriented, highly organized and able to drive and influence internal and external stakeholders

  • Candidate must be comfortable to travel for business purposes
