Job Description:

The Legal Director is to be based in Singapore and will be responsible for providing legal support to business units to achieve business goals while ensuring legal compliance and consistency. He / She is directly involved in developing and implementing business strategies that have a long-term impact (i.e. 3-5 years) on the organization. This position typically handles more substantive projects requiring focused expertise (such as Mergers and Acquisitions, Customs and Trade Compliance matters,), key customer contracts and data privacy matters. He / She ensures consistency in the legal and business positions taken by UPS and reviews applicable laws, policies and regulations to determine positions that best protect the company. The Legal Director evaluates, manages and mitigates risk for the organization. This position interacts / negotiates regularly and independently with senior management and external parties (e.g., customers, government authorities, etc.) including those with conflicting interests. The Legal Director manages litigation, including complex litigation. He / She manages outside counsel in representing UPS and monitors and manages legal expenses to contain costs. This position may manage others in the department. 

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Providing legal support for various UPS business units across multiple geographies in Region
  • Providing legal support in strategic and key transactional initiatives, such as M&A, joint venture, new products, real estate matters.  
  • Providing legal advisory support in matters involving customs and trade compliance
  • Advising and supporting key customer accounts
  • Providing advice and direction on data privacy laws impacting business operations and contractual relationships.
  • Handling various litigation cases and employment disputes
  • Drafting, review and negotiating local, regional and global commercial contracts and documents
  • Provides relevant training and coaching for appropriate employee groups
  • Supervising outside law firms used by UPS and managing external legal budget
  • Managing Legal Department’s daily operations, including manage department budget and develop innovative strategies around department productivity
  • Supervising legal staff

Job Requirements:

  • Possess a recognized Law Degree i.e. LLM or JD
  • Minimum 8-10 years of relevant legal experience in law firm and/or in-house
  • Prepared to assume a wider leadership role in addressing strategic business issues.
  • Ability to manage projects independently with minimal supervision.
  • Possess advanced drafting and negotiation skills in corporate and/or litigation matters.
  • Possess good planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to interact with different levels of people.
  • Matured personality; strong professionalism and long-term view towards career development
  • Fluent in English and preferably one other Asian language i.e. Mandarin, Japanese, Korean or etc
  • Applies cultural sensitivity when making decisions on business issues
  • Business traveling opportunities will be available.
