Senior Load Planning Analyst


The Planning Services Senior Analyst takes a lead role within the Surface Network Planning team to support the ground network planning strategies. He/She is responsible for managing strategic relationships within the enterprise relating to ongoing, multi-year programs relevant to a business unit's transportation network. The Planning Services Senior Analyst deploys and uses decision support tools by leveraging advanced problem solving techniques and technology to provide thought leadership for improved network effectiveness across multiple phases. This position leads complex process development or improvement and involvement in strategic communication with stakeholders. The Planning Services Senior Analyst develops and enhances complex models and processes supporting UPS corporate vision to reduce transportation network cost, increase network efficiency and grow profitable revenue.

The Planning Services Senior Analyst also identifies data requirements for project scope to determine project responsibilities, teammates, customers and researches background information to create project baselines used for identifying initial steps and project outcomes. He/She communicates process changes to UPS stakeholders to maintain a consistent, global understanding of plan changes within the organization. He/She analyzes data-modeling needs to determine data necessary to feed models and creates draft data models to meet the needs of analytical tools. The Planning Services Senior Analyst also identifies areas of improvement that have a high impact on the forecast process to direct development efforts to the proper areas, in addition to evaluating and critiquing the current forecasting process to ascertain methods for improving the process. He/She implements advanced analytics models and solutions to yield predictive and prescriptive insights from large volumes of structured and unstructured data. He/She also works with a team that is responsible for researching and implementing advanced analytics models utilizing a diverse set of techniques. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develops data design based on exploratory data analysis to meet stated business need
  • Identifies data requirements for the Enterprise Transportation Network Planning program to effectively leverage data, knowledge, and tools
  • Identifies areas of improvement that have a high impact on the forecast process to direct development efforts to the proper areas
  • Synthesizes insights and documents findings through clear and concise presentations and reports to inform stakeholders
  • Develops effective written and verbal communication strategies to gain consensus by clearly relaying key issues to UPS stakeholders
  • Audits and tests new processes to verify they operate successfully and automates processes where appropriate to increase process efficiency and accuracy
  • Researches academic journals and textbooks for new mathematical and statistical methods to improve the models
  • Establishes enterprise processes for strategic network planning and integration to maintain consistent planning approaches
  • Defines model KPI expectations and validation, testing, and re-training of existing models to meet business objectives
  • Reviews and creates repeatable solutions through written project documentation, process flowcharts, logs, and commented clean code to produce datasets that can be used in analytics and/or predictive modeling
  • Works with team using agile processes to develop models
  • Leverages analytics and visualization tools to design and present information to drive fact-based decision making

Knowledge and Skills

  • Specifies facts, research, and perspectives necessary to make projections; analyzes statistics and qualitative information within specified parameters; researches trends and conditions used to make projections
  • Demonstrates understanding of implementation objectives, project plan, and one's role within a project; participates in the implementation of a project; provides timely, thorough and concise updates for area of responsibility; identifies areas of risk and properly communicates them to the project manager
  • Leverages technological knowledge to achieve business objectives; resolves technological issues impeding work; adapts technological information, facts, or data to varying situations or groups; recommends changes to technological approach based upon knowledge of trends and best practices
  • Independently conducts standard analyses to identify problems in methods, processes, or workflow; interprets results of analyses; recommends solutions to address identified requirements, problems, or inefficiencies
  • Identifies common problems with current work designs; specifies requirements for new work designs; modifies or adjusts existing work methods, processes, and flows to resolve operations failures
  • Designs and evaluates complex research studies (e.g., predictive or experimental) to address the immediate business problem and related problems; identifies cause/effect relationships within the data; interprets findings and their implications to the business
  • Demonstrates a detailed understanding of business requirements or critical elements of a complex problem; develops creative, feasible, and integrated solutions that address multiple aspects of complex business problems
  • Demonstrates a basic knowledge of statistical terminology and understanding of analyses and/or tests (e.g. measures of central tendency, standard deviation, correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), simple linear regression, significance testing, etc.); displays the ability to calculate basic statistics
  • Demonstrates visualization techniques and supports training to encourage adoption of visualization tools
  • Works with team to present operationalized analytic findings and provide recommendations
  • Knowledge of R or Python, SQL, Tableau, PowerBI
  • Experience in understanding and implementing machine learning models and conducting thorough data analysis
  • Experience querying relational data systems for ETL
  • Good communications skills with ability to present to technical and business audiences
  • Master's Degree in a quantitative or computational field such as statistics, operations research, computer science, engineering, mathematics, data science or related discipline - Preferred
  • 2+ years of industry experience in a technical role - Preferred
  • Knowledge of the following, including but not limited to Generalized Linear and Non-Linear Models, Time Series Analysis, Random Forest, Gradient Boosted Machines, Unsupervised Methods - Preferred
  • Experience using Spark/Hadoop systems for distributed analytics and data processing - Preferred
  • Prior exposure to the transportation or logistics industry - Preferred
