Job Summary

This position is responsible for the preparation of state and local corporate income tax returns. The incumbent files annual reports and prepares state qualification listings to ensure UPS remains qualified to conduct business in various states. This role maintains up-to-date knowledge on taxes and tax law changes and utilizes technology to improve tax support.

This position prepares corporate income tax returns (i.e., prepares reports and appropriate documentation) for assigned companies to ensure compliance with state laws. The incumbent researches Department of Revenue notices to determine when notices should be sustained/reversed. This role reviews state code, regulations, and tax return instructions to ensure a proper tax return is prepared. This position monitors filing of annual reports to ensure the company remains qualified to conduct business in various states. The incumbent also collects and manipulates revenue data from various states to determine validity.

Responsibilities

  • Researches Department of Revenue notices to determine when notices should be sustained/reversed
  • Reviews state code, regulations, and tax return instructions to ensure a proper tax return is prepared
  • Sets up and maintains tax accounting activities for different subsidiaries to ensure proper documentation for tax records is maintained
  • Reviews journal entries to verify proper General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and tax treatment for transactions
  • Conducts a nexus check to direct the legal department of companies that should be withdrawn/qualified based on activity level
  • Prepares state qualification listings to identify a company is a legal state entity
  • Collects and manipulates revenue data from various states to determine validity
  • Manipulates software applications within UPS to improve accuracy of returns

Preferences

  • Demonstrates an understanding of processes, procedures, and methods within small package operations
  • Possesses knowledge of tools, equipment, and technology used in small package operations; identifies root causes of recurring issues; describes the general structure of small package operations
  • Bachelor's Degree (or internationally comparable degree) in Accounting
