Ease the Transition from Military to Civilian Life with These Four Tips

Are you a military veteran looking to take the next step in your career? At UPS, we value the skills and knowledge that military veterans have to offer and are always looking to add new talent to our team.  So if you’re ready to take the first step today towards a new career, follow these four simple steps.

Make your resume stand out

Your resume is the first impression that you will give to employers, so make it count. As a military veteran, you have an impressive set of skills and accomplishments, so be proud of them! Highlight these skills in a way that a civilian can process so they understand the unique expertise that you bring to the table.

Plan for civilian transition ahead of time

Begin planning for your civilian transition 6-8 months ahead of time by researching career paths you may want to take. The skills and knowledge gained in the military will help with the transition, but it’s important to understand how to use that to help take your career in a new direction – so use any and all resources at your disposal, whether it’s speaking with a mentor or researching companies online.

Utilize social media

Social media is one of the most effective ways to find out what a company is like through the eyes of its employees and can help you decide if it is a place you would like to work. In addition to learning about the company, social media is also a great way to network. This can be done by liking and following pages you are interested in as well as interacting with others through comments and messages.

Expand your professional network

Networking is the key to success when searching for your next career. As a veteran, there are many Veteran Service Organizations to join and network at, including the VFW and the American Legion. It is common for recruiters and HR managers to visit these types of gatherings, which helps to establish reliable contacts. Also, as stated above, social media is a great way to expand your network.
