The Package Handler Experience at UPS
What Does the Job Entail?
Being a Package Handler at UPS is all about keeping the process running smoothly and on schedule. You’ll be a key component to our team, collaborating with other hardworking handlers to do what you do best and see your efforts successfully have an impact on a global scale.
Known for its flexibility, the Package Handler’s schedule is great for college students and parents. With most shifts available Monday through Friday and all shifts available throughout the day and evening, our handlers are able to enjoy a healthy work-life balance and work toward personal goals in their free time.
“I got where I am by finishing my education, being aware of the opportunities available to me, taking advantage of the mentors I had access to, and beyond that… I found that every single time I asked to go up the ladder, that opportunity was afforded to me.”– Myron Gray, President of U.S. Operations
Many of our package handlers use that free time to develop professionally, seizing training and education opportunities within UPS to forge a career path that meets their needs and goals. In addition, many of our team members use the flexible schedule to their advantage, working in their free time to get their degree. UPS is a perfect fit for college students.
Most important part about the position? You will go about your day knowing that your safety is critical to us. Our people are our most important asset! That’s why we invest millions in health and safety training every year and strive to ensure health, wellness and safety continue to be part of our culture.
What are the Benefits & Perks?
We know there’s more to life than what you do. We offer a complete range of options for you to live in balance with work, education, family, friends and more. UPS administers several benefits plans to meet the health and wellness needs of various employee groups. While there are variations in available plans, the following is an overview of our award-winning benefits:
- Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance
- Life Insurance
- Work-Life Balance Programs
- Compensation & Saving Programs
In addition, we offer perks for part-time employees, parental benefits, on-the-job training and professional development opportunities, and flexible work schedules to allow you to achieve everything you dreamed of, and more. Fun fact: UPS invests about $565 million a year on training programs to help our people further the careers within the company.
The benefit we’re proudest of just might be our Earn & Learn program, because we believe those doing the heavy lifting deserve some hefty benefits. Join the UPS team in a part-time position and take advantage of our Education Assistance Program! You can earn $5,250 in assistance per calendar year (up to $25,000) to help you achieve your education and career goals. Those working night shifts in Louisville are eligible for the Metropolitan College program, wherein UPS will pay for all educational expenses to attend University of Louisville or Jefferson Community & Technical College.
“You’re in college, taking college courses and preparing for life after college and thinking what am I going to do? You realize ‘I have a job at UPS! And after college, UPS could be my future employer.’”– David, Part-time Package Handler
In 2014, UPS provided $16 million in tuition support to approximately 14,000 students, because the fact is most UPSers started their careers in part-time roles. Our commitment to promoting from within is tried and true – we believe in training today’s part-time employees to become tomorrow’s executives.
UPS offers a workplace focused on growth and development, promotion from within, diversity and recognition. We honor our people for their commitment and dedication to the organization, and strive to return the favor in any way we can. For example, meet Latin America’s first female Circle of Honor driver, Marlene Nazario. Marlene’s story is just one that demonstrates UPS’ desire to celebrate milestones and encourage our people to achieve their goals.
“UPS supports every single individual on their quest to move up within the organization, because everyone’s a winner on their team, regardless of what they look like, where they come from or what their personal beliefs are.”– Myron Gray, President of U.S. Operations
As an organization, UPS is proud to serve as an employer to a global group of entrepreneurs, innovators, creators and hard workers who, together, are striving to deliver a better world. We’re proud to say that our people endeavor to make an impact — like James, a UPS Driver in Detroit, who worked outside the box to brighten a young kid’s day. And we’re proud to say that as an organization, we’re always thinking about the bigger picture.
