Job Summary

The Supply Chain Optimization and Governance Specialist provides customized solutions for UPS customers to enhance their transportation systems and generates non-package revenues as well as revenue for International Small Package and Global Supply Chain Solutions. The specialist analyzes customer requirements and customer information to determine solutions that will assist them in delivering products to their customers more efficiently and develops project scopes to effectively deliver customer solutions. This position supports Solutions Engagement Resources (SERs) to help grow the customer solutions business and keeps up-to-date on industry trends and technology developments. Additionally, the specialist manages the governance policies, reporting mechanisms, process development and maintenance of performance metrics for Customer Solutions department.

Job Duties

Develops and implements customer solutions:
  • Designs and develops customer solutions to improve customer performance in moving their products.

  • Evaluates solutions prior to implementation to identify and rectify problems and to ensure solutions meet customers' expectations.

  • Obtains feedback from customers regarding solutions to ensure solutions meet their needs.

  • Implements customer solutions and provides required instruction and training to ensure solutions are successfully incorporated into the customer's business and to enhance their transportation systems.

  • Monitors and supports deployed customer solutions to ensure solutions are maintained and continue to operate effectively

Analyzes and defines project requirements:
  • Reviews resource engagement documents (i.e., details of customer requirements) to create work orders outlining tasks to be performed for sign-off by the customer.
  • Gathers and analyzes customer data and interviews and observes customers to determine true needs and specifics for providing the best customer solutions.
  • Assists the project manager in scope development and prioritization of tasks to be performed to keep project cost estimates aligned with customer needs.
  • Assists the project manager in completing the project planning cost worksheets to determine cost associated with delivering a proposed solution.
  • Assists the project manager in reviewing customer solution project details with the customer to detail project deliverables, costs, and the value added through implementing the recommended solution

Supports Solutions Engagement Resources:

  • Assists Solutions Engagement Resources in clarifying customer solution project goals to enable them to better sell customer solutions.
  • Provides customer solutions subject matter expertise to increase customer solutions knowledge and understanding, help identify customer solutions opportunities, and grow the business.
  • Assists the project manager in scope development and prioritization of tasks to be performed to keep project cost estimates aligned with customer needs.

Maintains Self Development, Communication and Reporting:

  • Develops industry knowledge and expertise (e.g., reads technical and industry journals, browses the internet, attends seminars, etc.) to remain current with industry and relevant technology developments.

  • Researches UPS's products and services and transportation technologies to effectively position and integrate UPS custom solutions.

  • Enters daily activities into project administration tools to create time sheets, expense reports, calendar entries, and project files and to provide project progress visibility.

Monitors governance policies and processes:

  • Develops communication platforms / mechanisms to department staff to ensure consistency in reporting.

  • Collaborates with identified stakeholders of each Customer Facing segment, SOLDI, Operations, and Finance to prioritize work and define detailed requirements of reporting performance metrics.

  • Generates and monitors the financial performance of the Customer Solutions group to identify cost or efficiency issues and ensure that financial goals are met.

  • Evaluates the Customer Solutions groups’ performance metrics periodically to ensure they appropriately drive desired results.

  • Develops and tracks departmental key performance indicators (KPIs) to continually assess business & individual performance.

  • Identifies multiple business needs in complex situations (e.g., involving several organizations, competitors, etc.); gathers complex data, evaluates trends in data and integrates information from many sources to determine needs; creates solutions that address current and future needs.

Business, Financial and Industry Knowledge:


Anticipates industry, financial, and global trends impacting UPS and customers’ organizations; identifies strategic recommendations based on anticipated trends; uses detailed understanding of customers’ functions, structures, and business models to make supply chain recommendations.

Designs/Develops Integrated Solutions to Business Problems:

Demonstrates a detailed understanding of business requirements or critical elements of a complex problem; develops creative, feasible, and integrated solutions that address multiple aspects of complex business problems.

Project Management:

  • Develops project management plans and leads the implementation for complex and medium duration projects as well as basic programs
  • Defines most of the initiatives project needs and cross-functional roles/responsibilities throughout the project life cycle
  • Develops recommendations on best way to fulfill the project requirements given the current project and organizational dynamics
  • Overcomes basic organizational resistance to cross-functional demands; demonstrates ability to successfully apply the project management discipline and remains current on project management practices and tools.

Supply Chain Management:

Integrates a broad knowledge of supply chains within customer organizations to solve complex customer problems; develop strategies to meet the customer’s supply chain needs.

Technical Writing:

  • Drafts specialized or technical documents
  • Tailors written communication to fit various audiences; demonstrates the appropriate use of visual elements (e.g. tables, graphs, diagrams, schematics, flowcharts, etc.)
  • Plans and edits content and structure of others’ technical documents.

Projects, Programs or Processes Design and Development:

  • Synthesizes information and facts to draw supported conclusions and insights; demonstrates logic, rationality, and objectivity in drawing conclusions, defining solution options and decision making.
  • Uses hypothesis driven investigation to solve problems; identifies relationships and patterns among data from various sources; tests for causality and identifies root causes of problems or trends.
  • Addresses and resolves issues impacting information systems reporting; looks for ways to minimize report generation and required storage; modifies existing report formats; creates and interprets customized reports; integrates data, information, and documents from multiple software programs; writes more complex report queries.

General Requirements


Mandatory experience:

  • Education Background: Bachelors in Engineering from a reputed institute

  • Additional qualification: Masters in Supply Chain Management or Operations.

  • Min Experience: 3-5 years of relevant experience in managing international supply chain optimization projects.

  • Expert level proficiency in Microsoft products viz. Visio, Excel, Project, Powerpoint.

  • Must have experience in managing end to end supply chain projects

  • Good command of English (written & oral).

  • Strong analytical skills, self-initiated and able to work independently without micromanagement.

  • Must be a resourceful team player with good inter-personal and communication skills

Preferred experience:

  • Experience in working on supply chain analytics tools like Llamasoft, Kinaxis, JDA. Tableau
  • Certification in Supply chain management / Logistics / Transportation from a reputed international institute viz. APICS, Supply Chain Council. MIT.
