Lead Operations Research Analyst

The Lead Operations Research (OR) Analyst designs and manages the development of leading edge optimizations and analytics based decision support tools throughout the organization. He/She develops moderately to highly complex models and algorithms and designs products, programs, and solutions that impact cost management for all UPS operations, acquisitions, pricing, and performance improvement. This position may manage others within the department.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Identifies requirements to design cutting-edge optimization tools that will reduce costs and improve efficiency
  • Designs and prototypes algorithms to ensure optimization results satisfy problem statements and business needs
  • Develops hypotheses, approaches (i.e., analytic plans and methodologies), tools, products, and solutions to solve problems and increase profitability
  • Presents analytic findings and recommendations to upper management to define problems, to propose business cases and strategies, and to gain support
  • Creates and develops solutions that are new to the industry to solve short- and long-term problems and address business needs
  • Develops interfaces with optimization models to meet the requirements of the planning process
  • Provides consultation to functional partners to support the design of planning systems
  • Develops procedures, maintenance, and support functions to monitor optimization and systems’ performance/integrity and to facilitate problem resolution.
  • Leads the analysis and integration of tools and methods to provide desired results from models and requirements
  • Manages resources and people processes (e.g., Performance Management, Career Development, Training, Staffing, etc.) to ensure the day to day administration of processes and formal procedures
  • Identifies individual and team skill gaps and developmental opportunities (e.g., training, special assignments, conferences, projects, etc.) to facilitate individual and team development
  • Ensures that direct and indirect reports have documented career goals and detailed plans for achieving these goals to develop them personally and professionally
  • Conducts frequent performance evaluations in a consistent, fair, and objective manner to facilitate open communication and encourage continuous performance improvement
  • Holds others accountable to established performance levels to achieve individual and group goals
  • Resolves individual and group performance issues in accordance with UPS’s policies and procedures in a timely manner to motivate and foster teamwork
  • Coaches others and provides on-going feedback and support to improve performance
  • Identifies opportunities to involve others in new and challenging work assignments and/or rotations that advance the skills and capabilities of individuals and the organization
  • Makes salary recommendations to reward employee performance
  • Monitors the industry to gain knowledge of hardware and software technologies, emerging technologies, and analytic techniques to ensure UPS is utilizing state-of-the-art tools
  • Determines relevance and potential value of new technologies to support business objectives and strategies
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on the advances in Ops Research and Advanced Analytics to translate new insights into potential opportunities for UPS
  • Manages project lifecycles, including project scope, resources, schedule, development, and deployment to ensure success
  • Develops project plans and assigns tasks to resources to ensure the project will be completed on time and according to specifications
  • Manages project teams to evaluate strategic alternatives, to determine impact, to recommend courses of action, to develop analytic plans, and to design and implement solutions
  • Leads teams and provides technical guidance to ensure tasks are completed within established timeline, to maintain desired quality of deliverables, and to overcome challenges/barriers

Knowledge and Skills

  • 10-15 years' experience in designing, developing, managing, and implementing optimization based planning systems
  • PhD in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Civil Engineering, or Statistics - Preferred
