The ATG Automation/Engineering Manager develops and manages strategic programs for UPS, including areas of Facility Designs of the Future, Robotics/Automation projects, AGVs/AGCs for autonomous solutions, Research and Development for software or hardware solutions, and AI/Machine Learning solutions and systems to improve our current and future state. He/She will make trips to various technology, software and material handling shows, and will keep up with emerging technology and identify solutions or applications to help UPS move forward in identified areas. The ATG Automation/Engineering Manager will also make trips to vendors to take a deeper look at the technology and software that is available. A strategy and success plan will then be developed to highlight how UPS can move these various solutions to an end-state deployment.

The ideal candidate needs to be knowledgeable about emerging technology and understand how and where to apply technology in our diverse landscape at UPS. He/She must have an intimate understanding of the operation and development of robotic solutions (end-effectors, motion planning, vision systems and AI/ML), and will lead the development of logistic and autonomous robots for UPS.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Manages various strategic robotic initiatives
  • Develops modular robotic components to enable robotics (AI/ML or CNN layers and components)
  • Works with other experts to ensure robotic solutions work within the given needs and job setups (Facility Design, Robotics/Automation, Research and Development, AGVs/AGCs, etc.)
  • Identifies or develops new solutions, products, or practices for UPS (Protocols, Platforms, Standards and Strategies)
  • Manages vendor projects to ensure the given solution(s) aligns with the needs of UPS
  • Develops software solutions that aids or replaces mundane tasks at UPS to optimize or improve current processes
  • Identifies/implements KETs (Key Enabling Technologies) to improve processes at UPS
  • Determines how to deploy solutions to the end-state for UPS
  • Develops success stories for pilots or projects that will happen across the company
  • Works cross-functionally with different disciplines at UPS (Plant Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Surface Network Planning, Transportation, Information Technology/Security and various other stake holders)

Knowledge and Skills

  • Project Management: Develops project management plans and leads the implementation for basic projects of short duration requiring limited coordination and resources; supports initiatives with well-defined project needs and cross-functional roles/responsibilities throughout the project life cycle; manages minimal organizational resistance to cross-functional project demands; employs project management tools and technology (e.g., Microsoft Project, Program Management Group website, etc.) appropriately
  • Project Planning: Develops and executes project management plans for basic projects of short duration requiring limited coordination and resources; supports initiatives with well-defined project needs and cross-functional roles/responsibilities throughout the project life cycle; manages minimal organizational resistance to cross-functional project demands; employs project management tools and technology (e.g., Microsoft Project, Program Management Group website, etc.) appropriately
  • Vendor/Supplier Management: Demonstrates a broad understanding of UPS and vendor business needs and goals; reviews and recommends appropriate vendors based on business needs to internal stakeholders; provides input into the creation of vendor contracts or agreements; communicates expectations to vendors
  • Development using ROS 1.0/2.0
  • Development of CNNs using Python
  • Bachelor’s degree (or internationally comparable degree) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics or Data Scientist - Preferred
  • Masters or PhD in Robotics or other relevant fields, with commercial experience - Preferred
  • Knowledge of Electrical Design for Facilities (Controls, Power, Safety Requirements, Networking, PLC systems, HMI systems, WIFI networks, Radio Networks and WMS) - Preferred
  • Programming ability in C, C++, Java, PHP, Apache, MySQL and Python - Preferred
  • Experience in developing, building and programming robotic solutions for material handling - Preferred
  • Experience in developing facility layouts in AutoCAD (2D/3D) - Preferred
  • Experience in optimization, simulation and emulation software for facility design - Preferred
  • Experience in flow control for facilities and data modeling for facility optimization - Preferred
  • Experience in deploying AGVs/AGCs in a live environment - Preferred
  • Experience in VR/AR for maintenance enhancement - Preferred
  • Experience in Predictive Maintenance - Preferred
  • Ability to speak multiple languages (Chinese, French, etc.) - Preferred
  • Experience or knowledge of maintenance drones - Preferred
  • Working knowledge across multiple disciplines (Programming, AI/ML, electrical design, mechanical systems, drones, AGVs/AGCs, Facility Design, VR/AR, etc.) - Preferred
